A film, a book, a gig, a show .. they are all the same
There’s no difference between producing a book, or a gig, or a show or, for that matter, a film. You have to know if there is an audience, who your audience is, bring the correct elements together in the right way, give them the space to do what they do best, and a little bit of help to exceed their own expectations, bring that to fruition, find ways to reach it’s audience and deliver it.
Deliver something that entertains, informs, or transforms everyone who comes into contact with it.
A Producer is similar to a Mexican Walking Fish, they sound good but no one’s quite sure what one is. Like a Mexican Walking Fish, a Producer does exactly what they sound like they should.
A Mexican Walking Fish, is errr … a fish that walks. A Producer errr … produces, a Producer is someone who initiates a project and oversees it from the conceptual stage through to completion.
Although a Mexican Walking Fish is not actually, to be fair, a fish, but an amphibian. It is also true for a producer that they can seem to be paraphylytic, but are in fact multi-terrain adapted.
A Producer can work on a film, a theatrical production, a show, a gig, a book, or a dozen other things, that require a creative project initiating, and overseeing to completion.
Some producers are entrepreneurs, answering to themselves, and they often have the idea, the vision, and create it from nothing.
Others are employee-producers, who get asked to bring someone else’s idea to light. They work for an employer such as a film studio or an independent production company, band or other creative body like a festival.
Producers are decision makers, they make a hundred decisions a day, from a creative idea to the details of a credit on a flyer. They are responsible for initiating, coordinating, supervising, and controlling all aspects of the the production. Whatever it is.
Good ones pick people, or teams, who are very good at their roles within a production, from the ‘talent’, through technical teams to the person who designs the flyer, and then lets them get on with their job to the best of their ability.
However, a producer is involved with, and supervises all phases of production, on a daily basis, with the creative, financial, technological and administrative processes, from inception to completion.
The Producer oversees and controls all aspects of the Above-and-Below-the-line talents and crafts. Producers must also interact in concert with the provisions of all collective bargaining agreements and personal service contracts. That is a lot of personal relationship management.
The producer is the person who makes sure a project crosses the line.
They can also, often, be the promoter too.
So all terrain, like I said.
On that note, a Mexican Walking Fish is cute too, right? They are an axoloti, which means ‘Water Doll’, a producer is never refered to as ‘What a Doll’. See, the similarities are everywhere.
